About the picture: This is a yellow Iris flower picture from my garden. It is a bearded Iris. The fuzzy strip that runs down the middle of the hanging petals is called the beard.
Iris flowers are delicate and so pretty and interesting. They just don't last that long ... even in the garden.
The name Iris is taken from the Greek word for rainbow. There are many flower colors. The purple and blue colors are in the majority. A true red bearded Iris is not available.

Photography Tips
Taking pictures of this delicate flower comes with limitations.
The flowers are at their peak for a very short period. So, when you spot one that is perfect and fresh, do not pass the opportunity to photograph it. Tomorrow will be too late. Yes, the flower will still be there, but it will not be good enough for photography anymore.
Another thing to keep in mind is that some plants have more than one flower on a stem. They do not usually bloom at the same time. So, if you catch the second flower blooming, you may have the remains of a wilted flower in your view finder... not so pretty. You can bypass this problem by taking a close-up photo of the flower. In other words you can cut out the bits that you do not want in the picture.

Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh painted Irises. They are mostly oil on canvas and the flowers that he painted are in the blue and purple range.
Claude Monet
The French painter Claude Monet also painted quite a few Iris paintings. One of his well known paintings is called "the path in the Iris garden".
Georgia O'Keeffe
American artist Georgia O'Keeffe is known for her flower paintings. She also painted Irises. Her paintings are mostly of one or two flowers that fill the canvas... close-ups.
