Iris Flower Photo
This Iris flower photo is of Dietes Grandiflora or wild Iris. It is mainly white with violet and touches of yellow. The plant is in the Iris family of plants (Iridaceae), but it is not of the Iris genus. It is not what I would call a real Iris. It originates from Southern Africa. We have a number of these plants in our garden. Well I'll go and count... more than 50. They are a joy to have. The flowers are in abundance in spring and summer. And I do see a flower or two during winter. I don't think they generally flower in the colder months. When I first fell in love with them, I was very disappointed to find out that they do not make good cut flowers. They last for a day or two on the plant.

About the Picture Background A good background was easy to find. It is dark shaded foliage. In our garden this wild Iris grows in shade and semi-shade. In other words, there are lots of foliage in the shade for a dark green background.
