4 Tips for Flower Care at Home
Gerber daisy flower tips... Learn how to keep your flowers looking fresh for as long as possible. Here are my 4 tips to make it simple.
- Keep It Clean - Keep It Cool - Handle with Care - It’s Not Over Till It’s Over
Keep It Clean
Bacteria and fungi are troublemakers with these lovely blooms.
How do you avoid the problem? You keep everything clean... the vase, the water, the cutting tools, and the working surface.
Cleaning the Vase Clean the vase with soap and water if needed, and also rinse the vase with bleach and water to disinfect.
Water and Flower Food Put enough water in the vase to last the gerber daisies for a few days, but don’t fill the vase to the top. The stems should not be too deep in the water. Add cut flower food to keep the water from building up bacteria and supply nutrients to the blooms.
Cutting the Stems Cut the stems a little shorter with a clean sharp knife. Do this just before you put the blooms in the vase with water and flower food.
Keep It Cool
Keep the flowers at a low even temperature. The best temperature is between 45 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 to 16 degrees Celsius.
Don’t put the blooms close to radiators, draughts and bright sunlight.
Handle with Care
Pick the flower up by holding it between the thumb and index finger at the base of the flower head. Never pick these ladies up by their fragile stems, and never pull them by the head.
It’s Not Over Till It’s Over
Once you have your flowers in a vase in a good position, it’s time to enjoy their color and cheerfulness.
Make it a habit to check on the ladies once a day. See that all the stems have enough water for at least another few days.
Change water and cut flower food every two days. Clean the vase at the same time. Check the stems every few days. Cut the stems shorter if the ends of the stems are not looking fresh anymore. Also cut the stems shorter if they are drooping .
