The bird of paradise plant starts flowering just before winter. It keeps on flowering during winter. Its flowers are always a welcome burst of color during winter. But, the main display of flowers happens in spring.

The flowers are carried higher than the leaves. And, you will notice the flower, even if there is only one.
Striking Leaves
The leaves are also impressive. They make a display on their own. Some of the young leaves have a reddish vein or a line down the middle of the leaf.
